Richard Thomas, 27, who admit to raping a woman in Leigh, Greater Manchester has not only been sentenced to five years and four months in jail, but he also learned that he may have contracted HIV from his victim.
According to All Voices, Thomas is a resident of Sandringham Drive, Leigh and confessed to raping a woman in Leigh after breaking into her house while she was asleep after taking a sleeping pill.
Thomas had admit to drinking heavily and taking drugs the night he raped the woman.
According to BBC News, Thomas had let himself into the house uninvited in the middle of the night and the woman awoke to find him raping her.
Harry Pepper, prosecuting, said: “She froze and no words were exchanged. He pulled up his shorts and left.”
Thomas stated that he could not remember these events taking place, but did know he had been using and drinking heavily.
All Voices reported that even though Thomas didn’t remember these events ever taking place, he did believe everything the woman said and confessed of his crime.
I guess Richard Thomas was trying to do the right thing in admitting to his actions, even though he couldn’t remember exactly what had gone down after his drinking binge.
Turns out Thomas ended up getting more then he could chew when he was informed of his own health risks during court.
According to BBC News, Thomas has known that the woman was sick, but had no idea she was ill due to HIV.
When he was informed in court that she was in fact HIV positive, Thomas collapsed in the middle of the court hearing.
Judge Mark Brown described the crime as “dreadful,” and his barrister, Virginia Hayton, said: “It is his own fault, if he had not committed this offense he would not have placed himself in this position.”
Richard Thomas is due to find out whether he has contracted HIV later in the week.
