Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst, a 28-year-old teacher from Southern California, was arrested this week for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old high school student.
Whitehurst gave birth to a child earlier this June and police believe that the 16-year-old student is the father.
According to the Daily Mail, police were contacted by the student’s mother earlier this week. She was questioned at home in Redlands on Monday night and then arrested for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Whitehurst was released from jail after posting $25,000 bond. Se is currently on administrative leave from Citrus Valley High School.
Assistant School Superintendent Sabine Robertson-Phillips said: “Nothing is as important to us as the safety of our students and the District takes this arrest very seriously. We are fully cooperating with police in their investigation of this matter … Our heart goes out to the victim and his family.”
Redlands police Cmdr. Shawn Ryan said that Whitehurst reportedly had a year long relationship with the student.
Ryan said: “One thing led to another, and he ended up at her residence, and it’s been going on, going for approximately one year now … She was open with her pregnancy. I don’t know what her story was to everybody else, but it was an open pregnancy. The school district knew about it.”
Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst taught English to sophomores at Citrus Valley Highschool and was a Compact Careers Club adviser. In 2010, the 28-year-old was a volunteer coach in the Redlands American Youth Soccer Organization.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time that a teacher has reportedly had their student’s baby. Last year a Colorado teacher admitted that she had a baby with one of her 17-year-old students.
