A deadly 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit northern Italy on Tuesday, killing at least 15 people and leaving more than 200 residents injured. The earthquake hit just nine days after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake killed seven people.
Following Tuesday’s quake dozens of aftershocks could be felt throughout the area including 5.3 and 5.1 magnitude shocks.
The earthquake was centered in the province of Modena with the towns of Mirandola and Cavezzo closest to the epicenter.
According to eyewitness reports the town of Cavezzo was nearly 70% destroyed as pictures and video from the town showed damaged buildings and destroyed structures. In one incident the steeple of a church was completely missing.
Speaking to CNN journalist Andrea Vogt revealed:
“We don’t know how many are still trapped. Telephone lines are overloaded. It’s difficult to get through to emergency personnel.”
In the meantime officials in Italy predict that upwards of 12,000 people will be displaced because of earthquakes over the last 10 days and officials are working to setup tent camps to house anyone forced out of their homes. Hotels and campsites have also been offering space to displaced earthquake victims.
In a televised statement Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said:
“The state will do all what needs to be done, in the quickest way, to assure the return to normal life to such a special and productive region of the country.”
In the meantime upwards of 50 aftershocks with magnitudes of 2 to 3 also shook the region on Tuesday.
As Italian officials work to secure the area for citizens they are asking for help in securing tents and other supplies that can assist displaced residents.
