Teddy Geiger Transitioning: Singer-Songwriter Says ‘This Is Who I’ve Been For A Long Time’

Singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger, who is best known for the 2006 hit “For You I Will (Confidence),” and for writing songs for artists such as Shawn Mendes and One Direction, is transitioning.

The announcement was made via Instagram on Friday, when the 29-year-old Geiger shared a recent social media exchange with a fan who asked why the singer has been looking “different” as of late. Complimenting the fan for asking nicely, Geiger announced the recent choice to transition, adding that the decision was made after consulting with loved ones on the matter.

“I started talking about it with a couple of my close friends and family about a month ago and it’s given me the courage to start the process. I feel like the next step is to tell all y’all. So here goes. Love it or hate [it], this is who I have been for a looooong time.”

As noted by Bustle, Teddy Geiger’s transitioning announcement was warmly received by followers, many of whom said that they were proud and ready to show support for the singer-songwriter. One fan had partly referenced the title of Geiger’s biggest chart hit, commenting that Teddy had shown a lot of courage and confidence to announce such a decision to thousands of followers around the world.

Geiger first became a household name in the mid 2000s, appearing in the VH1 reality show In Search of the Partridge Family at the age of 16, according to Rolling Stone. Two full-length albums followed, with the single “For You I Will (Confidence)” peaking at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and solidifying Teddy’s status as a teen idol. Geiger also did some acting, most notably in the 2008 comedy The Rocker, which starred Rainn Wilson in the lead role and also featured Emma Stone and Josh Gad as Wilson and Geiger’s bandmates.

Teddy Geiger kept a lower profile in more recent years, but had arguably achieved greater success behind the scenes, writing songs for One Direction and Shawn Mendes. Geiger had worked especially closely with Mendes, co-writing several Billboard Hot 100 hits for the Canadian singer, including “Stitches,” “Mercy,” “Treat You Better,” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” all of which reached the Top 20.

Speaking to MTV News in August about the songs he co-wrote with Geiger and fellow songwriter Scott Harris, Mendes was all praises for his two co-collaborators, commending them for loving and understanding the music they created with the 19-year-old singer.

“There’s this thing that I think that we really connect on that level, where they both kind of really understood what it was like to be the singer and be the performer.”

Apart from an Instagram selfie on Friday afternoon thanking fans and friends for the love and support, Teddy Geiger has yet to issue further comment following the transitioning announcement.
