Sherin Mathews Update: Father Changes Story, Says He Dumped Her Body After She Choked On Milk

The father of Sherin Mathews, the missing 3-year-old Richardson, Texas toddler, changed his story on Monday, and now says he dumped the girl’s body after she died choking on milk. Meanwhile, authorities are still waiting for positive identification of a body found near the family’s home; a body that Richardson police believe is “most likely” Sherin’s.

As The Dallas Morning News reports, Wesley Mathews, 37, is currently facing felony charges of injury to a child. For the past two weeks, ever since Sherin first went missing, Mathews has claimed that he forced the young girl to stand outside at 3:00 a.m. as punishment for not drinking her milk. He had further claimed that when he went to check on her 15 minutes later, she was gone.

On Monday, accompanied by his attorney, Wesley Mathews gave a new version of events. Specifically, he had been trying to get her to drink her milk on October 7, the day she disappeared, and when she wouldn’t, he “physically assisted” her. She later began to choke, and after a period of time, he couldn’t detect a pulse. He allegedly admitted to dumping the body after she died.

The area around where the Mathews family lived was known to be inhabited by coyotes, something Wesley Mathews knew, according to authorities.

On Sunday, rescue workers using search dogs found a young child’s body less than a mile from the Mathews’ home. Although authorities believe the body is Sherin’s, the body has not been officially identified as of this writing.

Meanwhile, disturbing details have emerged about Sherin and her family.

As Fox News reported this week, Sherin was adopted from an orphanage in India. Workers at the orphanage say that the girl’s biological family abandoned the developmentally-disabled girl when she was one year old. Babiti Kumari, the former secretary of the Mother Teresa Adoption Center, who called Sherin by her birth name, Saraswati, described her life at the orphanage.

“During her initial days, Saraswati used to remain quiet but gradually she opened up at the center.”

Back in Texas, another child who had been living at the Mathews home has been in the state’s foster care system for two weeks. As KXAS-TV (Dallas) reported this week, Wesley Mathews and his wife, Sini, have a four-year-old biological daughter who is currently in foster care. The reasons why she was removed from the family have not been made public, but Texas authorities indicate that she will remain in foster care until further notice.

This is a developing story. More information about the Sherin Mathews case will be published as it becomes available.
