2NE1 Disbandment: Why Did The Groundbreaking Kpop Girl Group Really Split?

2NE1’s disbandment shocked Kpop fans with many who loved the groundbreaking Kpop girl group still trying to come to terms with the fact that Dara, CL, Minzy, and Park Bom will never make music together again.

Many 2NE1 fans are asking one main question: why?

According to the official statement from the group’s agency, YG Entertainment 2NE1’s disbanding had a lot to do with the fact that one member, Minzy, had already permanently left the group of her own accord.

“As of May 2016, 2NE1’s exclusive contract with YG was over and seeing as Minzy was longer able to continue with the group, YG, along with the members, have decided to officially disband 2NE1 after many discussions,” the statement read, as translated by Koreaboo.

YG citing Minzy’s departure as a reason for 2NE1’s disbandment is interesting because, as Inquisitr previously reported, when Minzy made her announcement they said that 2NE1 would not disband. At the time the plan was for them to continue making music and performing as a trio.

Here’s what YG had to say at the time.

“Last January, we had individual face-to-face talks with each member regarding renewing their contracts and showed our desire for the group to reform. Unfortunately, Gong Minzy did not feel the same.”

So what happened to that “desire for the group to reform,” they expressed six months ago?

2NE1 fans, officially known as Blackjacks, are placing the blame for the disbandment not on the members of the group but on YG Entertainment. Many are using the hashtag “#Justicefor2NE1” to express their dissatisfaction.

As Koreaboo notes, Minzy made the announcement that she was leaving the group via Instagram in April of this year. There’s been lots of speculation as to why she decided to part ways with a group that she’s been in for seven years.

2NE1: YG Entertainment K-Pop Girl Group Confirmed To Disband, CL And Dara Re-Signed To Label As Soloists

As Inquisitr previously reported, Minzy’s decision not to renew her contract with YG could have had a lot to do with her not getting the support she wanted for her solo efforts.

Minzy’s solo efforts paled in comparison to the other members of 2NE1, and that could have been attributed to a lack of support from the agency.

As for the other members of the girl group, Sandra Park will continue to work with YG but as an actress. CL, 2NE1’s leader, re-signed with YG as well but she is aggressively pursuing success in the US market and is working with famed manager Scooter Braun. Park Bom, whose reputation has been tarnished because of a drug scandal, did not re-sign with YG either.

What do you think is the real reason behind 2NE1’s disbandment. Let us know in the comments below.
