2NE1 disbandment news rocked the Kpop world recently. Although there were many clear indicators that the group members were going their separate ways, the reality of the disbandment shocked many fans who are now mourning the end of an era.

Here’s what 2NE1’s agency, YG Entertainment had to say about the disbandment, according to All Kpop.

“For the past seven years, 2NE1 was a representative group of YG. We, too, cannot express how upset and disappointed we are. However, we judge that it’ll be difficult to continue promoting. We decided that instead of looking forward to 2NE1’s unpredictable promotions, we should rather focus on the solo promotions of the members.”

Make no mistake, 2NE1 is a pretty groundbreaking Kpop group. As Fuse notes, the group were trailblazers when it comes to making Hallyu entertainment mainstream across the world.

They are the first and only Kpop girl group to sell out a stadium tour in the United States during their New Evolution Global Tour in 2012. The sold out tour stops were in New York and California.

According to Fuse , 2NE1’s 2014 album Crush was until recently the highest charting Kpop album ever. It debuted at number 61 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

2NE1 also appeared on America’s Next Top Model and The Bachelor and were featured in US magazine, Nylon . But although the 2NE1 disbandment is pretty sad news for Kpop, they have cleared a path for new Kpop girl groups to gain international followings.

While none of these girl groups will ever truly replace 2NE1, they’re keeping South Korean girl groups on the map.

Black Pink

Black Pink is also under the YG unbrella. The group consists of members Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé. According to K Profiles , the group debuted this year in August. Since then, they’ve been having lots of success.

As Yibada reports, one of their most recent tracks, “Playing With Fire,” recently charted at number 92 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart this week. The track is on the Kpop girl group’s second album, Square Two

Black Pink’s Square Two album has also become a fixture on Billboard’s World Albums Chart, placing in the top 3 for the past couple of weeks, Yibada reports.

As Inquistr previously reported, Kpop fans have noted that there’s a distinct similarity between 2NE1 and Black Pink, something that the rookie girl group discussed in an interview.

“We’re in the same company as 2NE1 and we get our songs from the same producers, so the influence is natural. Since they’ve done a lot of things before us, we want to emulate them. But at the same time, we hope there will soon be an opportunity to show our own unique color. We want to succeed with our own unique color,” said Lisa of Black Pink.

“Because we’re a rookie group, we’re currently focusing on our team. We’re hoping there will be opportunities to study songwriting and lyric writing in the future. If we had to pick our group’s specialty, it would be performance, ” she continued. “We’ve learned a lot of dance genres that a lot of girl groups tend not to learn, and we think those things will be a point of differentiation when we perform on stage.”

TWICE

TWICE is managed by a rival agency to YG Entertainment and like Black Pink, they’ve been enjoying lots of success, even moreso than YG’s group.

As Inquisitr previously reported, according to Billboard TWICE’s second EP, Page 2 , is the highest selling album released in 2016 by a kpop girl group. The album, as of the writing of that article, had sold 150,000 physical copies of the album sold, a huge milestone when you consider that normally it’s the male groups that get lots of sales of their physical albums.

Apink

This year Apink repeated a milestone that 2NE1 set in 2012. They became the first Kpop girl group since 2NE1 to go on an arena tour in the US in January of this year, Billboard reports. Although Apink’s music and image tends to lean to the more innocent side, it’s safe to say that 2NE1 paved the way for this aspect of the group’s success.
