Cheerleader Breaks The World Back Flip Record [Video]

Miranda Ferguson, a 16-year-old Texas high school cheerleader, has broken the Guinness World Record for the amount of continuous backward hand-springs.

As part of Dallas’ Hockaday School, she completed 35 consecutive backward springs and thus beat the previous record of 32. There were two officials there to witness and count along to her triumph.

Her attempt was the halftime performance during her school’s encounter and came after she had previously completed 20 handsprings at an encounter last year. After that success, she set her sights on beating the world record.

This attempt saw her back flip from one 15-yard line to the other, and she was flanked by her fellow cheerleaders. She later told Fox News, “I’m extremely excited, but also really relieved. I was really nervous that if I did one more that I was just going to fall, so I was like, ‘I’m going to stay at 35. I got this.'”

The energetic crowd helped to cheer her long and they counted along to each flip. “Really just the fans out there really helped me to get through it,” added Ferguson. “My head isn’t too bad, but my back is kind of sore. I’m sure I’m going to feel it tomorrow.” Ferguson was instantly mobbed by her teammates after her success and will surely be the most popular kid in her school for the next few weeks at least.

America’s cheerleaders had earlier this year set the world record the largest cheer ever recorded. This saw 1,300 cheerleaders from across the East Coast come together and out shout their 1,200 Chinese counterparts who had previously set the record at the 2008 Olympics.
