Watch Donald Trump San Jose Rally Stream Live: Trump Invades Silicon Valley In All-Out California Blitz

Donald Trump, making an all-out bid to win California in the November general election, drives into the heart of Silicon Valley Thursday with a huge rally that will stream live from the San Jose Convention Center. Trump, who now trails Hillary Clinton in the Golden State by double digits, vows to “make a real run” at defeating Clinton there and winning the state’s 55 electoral college votes, the most of any state in the nation.

California has been a Democratic general election stronghold since the 1992 presidential election. Bill Clinton won the state in that year and again in 1996. Al Gore won California in 2000 followed by John Kerry in 2004 and two straight wins by Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Hillary Clinton appears overwhelmingly likely to hold California for the Democrats again this year, with a current 18.6 percentage point lead, according to the Pollster.com polling average.

Even if Trump convinced every currently undecided voter and every voter now committed to a third-party candidate to vote for him instead, he would still lose California to Clinton, according to the Pollster.com average.

His seeming obsession with what appears to be a lost cause — rather than focusing on important swing states such as Florida and Ohio, where he has a real chance to catch Hillary Clinton and which he must win under most plausible scenarios to have a hope of capturing the White House.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to lash out at the media for what he says is unfair coverage of his campaign. His chief spokesperson, Katrina Pierson, explains the situation to CNN interviewer Chris Cuomo in the following video exchange.

The San Jose rally is the second of three straight in California for Donald Trump. On Wednesday in Sacramento, he unleashed another of his vituperative and over-the-top attacks on Hillary Clinton, calling her “a person with no actual talent” who “should not be allowed to run” due to the ongoing controversy over her use of a private email server.

Before Clinton was scheduled to deliver a foreign policy speech on Thursday, a speech expected to be an excoriation of Trump’s foreign policy positions, Trump branded the speech “such lies.”

Trump also said on Wednesday that he plans to attack President Barack Obama as part of his campaign.

“If he campaigns that means I’m allowed to hit him just like I hit Bill Clinton,” Trump said. “He wants to keep this terrible agenda going where everyone is ripping us.”

But political experts say that taking on Obama directly is also likely to constitute another strategic mistake for Trump, with Obama’s approval ratings hitting their highest point of his second term. In fact, Obama’s current 52 percent positive approval rating, according to the Gallup tracking poll, makes Obama slightly more popular than Ronald Reagan was at a comparable period in 1988.

In that election year, Reagan’s vice president, George H.W. Bush, won a landslide victory in November over Democrat Michael Dukakis.

“Elections are a choice but a lot of that choice is about whether or not people want to stay the course,” political scientist Christopher Wlezien of the University of Texas told Bloomberg News this week. “The referendum choice is going to be based a lot on what people think of the president and how the economy is doing.”

Donald Trump will hold his third straight California rally on Friday, with a live stream from the scenic northern California city of Redding, at 1 p.m. local time.
