New ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer Puts John Boyega’s Finn In The Spotlight

There has never been a shortage of teasers and trailers for the highly-anticipated upcoming Star Wars film, The Force Awakens. And it’s safe to assume that more trailers are on the way. The latest one, however, puts the spotlight on Finn (played by John Boyega), giving us more details about what to expect from the character once the movie hits cinemas in December.

Here’s what we know so far: John Boyega’s Finn is an Stormtrooper who grew a conscience and in so doing went AWOL. Having been raised to serve the Empire since he was a child, Finn is forced to face the inner turmoil that comes with the realization that he’s serving the wrong cause. It’s a struggle that Finn has to face, but from that struggle comes the realization that his experiences as a Stormtrooper puts him in a position that enables him for the good of the galaxy.

The first line from the new Star Wars trailer was from Finn himself:

“You don’t know a thing about me. What I’ve seen, what I’ve done. We all need to run.”

The first scenes in the new Star Wars trailer show Finn fulfilling his duties as a Stormtrooper. Then it cuts to the scene where he removes his Stormtrooper helmet, visibly regretting the things he has done in the line of duty. The next scene sees him fleeing camp with the other lead character, Rey (played by Daisy Ridley). while being attacked by the Empire.

There are cool scenes in the Star Wars trailer where Finn can be seen brandishing a lightsaber. Even notable is that the lightsaber he wields is the same color as the one used by Luke Skywalker. Better yet, there’s a scene showcasing Finn in his fighting glory as he fights a Stormtrooper using the lightsaber. There’s a Han Solo sighting in the Star Wars trailer too. The scene shows Han posing a question to Finn: “Are you sure you’re up for this?” Finn’s response was indicative of the trouble he has put himself into: “I don’t know.” The scenes at the end of the Star Wars trailer shows Finn on board the Millenium Falcon. Finn visibly celebrates after hitting his target. Interspersed among the scenes were shots of Kylo Ren wielding a cross-guard lightsaber, which makes one wonder whether there’s a connection between him and Finn we have yet to know about.

John Boyega, a lifelong Star Wars fan himself, was more than thrilled about the prospect of playing one of the lead characters in the upcoming Star Wars film. When the first Star Wars trailer hit the web for the first time last October, John Boyega recorded his epic reaction (which involved jumping over the couch and screaming at the top of his lungs) at seeing it via Instagram.

What made John Boyega’s casting in Star Wars: The Force Awakens more significant is that it marks another milestone in the collective push for diversity across the media industry. As previously reported in Entertainment Weekly, Boyega feels the significance of his role in the new Star Wars film as a man of color.

“We see through the eyes of children that they’re not talking about race the way we grown folks are. They’re not talking about color or how much melanin is in someone’s skin. That should teach us something,” Boyega says.

His response to the backlash issued by bigoted Star Wars fans? Let’s just say that Boyega had a mic drop moment.

“We’ve been having a continuous struggle with idiots, and now we should just force them to understand – and I love the way I just used Force there, by the way – just force people to see this is the new world. There are loads of people of different shades and backgrounds. Get used to it.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is slated for cinematic release on December 18.
