Baby Doe Update: Bella Bond’s Mother And Her Boyfriend Face Charges In Court

Boston’s “Baby Doe” has been identified as Bella Bond, 2, after several weeks and thousands of tips.

On Monday morning, Bella’s mother, Rachelle D. Bond, 40, and her boyfriend, Michael P. McCarthy, 35, were in court to face charges in connection with the child’s murder. According to the Boston Globe, McCarthy was charged with murder and was denied bail.

Bond is being held on $1 million bail for being an accessory to the murder after the fact. Both McCarthy and Bond have been accused of dumping the girl’s body into the ocean.

“Suffolk Assistant District Attorney David Deakin said in court that Bond told police that in late May, Bella was unwilling to go to bed and ‘unruly.’ McCarthy said he would go to the back bedroom and ‘try to calm her down.’ The mother went back and found him standing over the child. Bella’s head appeared to be swollen and her face was gray. And the mother knew her daughter was dead, she told police, the prosecutor said. The mother said that McCarthy told her, ‘She was a demon anyway. It was her time to die,’ according to the prosecutor.”

Baby Doe/Bella Bond was reportedly placed in a trash bag and then in the refrigerator for an unknown amount of time. The couple reportedly injected the dead child with heroin before dumping her body into the Boston Harbor.

According to ABC News, an official cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner, but it sounds like it may have been suffocation or asphyxiation. And, sadly, this may not have been the first time that this child was mistreated.

Bella Bond, a.k.a. Baby Doe, was yelled at and locked in a closet on at least one occasion, according to a family friend. The report states that the Department of Children and Families had taken Bella away from her mother at one point in time.

Rachelle Bond reportedly has a “lengthy criminal history.” Those closest to the situation say that Bella was loved, but that she was hardly ever seen because of Rachelle Bond’s relationship with her family.

“Prosecutors said Bond has a lengthy criminal history including drug convictions and prostitution convictions, in addition to several restraining orders against her including by her mother and mother’s husband.”

Both McCarthy and Bond pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
