A Louisiana teacher’s shocking admission to a number of unlawful acts has landed him in jail. The jaw-dropping allegations come as quite a shock to school officials because Keith, who taught 9th and 10th-grade physics and geography at the Mathematics, Science and Arts Academy-West in Plaquemine, was recently honored as “Teacher of the Year.” Now, his disturbing actions may lead to years behind bars.
According to NOLA.com, Keavin Keith was arrested on Tuesday, May 19, after admitting to engaging in numerous sexual acts with at least three of his female students. It has been reported that on May 18, one of Keith’s former students came forward with the allegations that led to his arrest.
According to the Advocate, Keith is facing a staggering number of charges including:
- two counts of indecent behavior with juveniles
- five counts of felony carnal knowledge
- 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student
The school district’s Chief Academic Officer Elvis Cavalie released a detailed statement about the shocking allegations and the charges against Keith. Needless to say, the accusations are quite shocking since Keith was considered one of the school’s highly lauded instructors.
“Please be assured that we will do everything we can to cooperate with police in this matter,” Cavalier said early Tuesday. “The district is ready to carry out any actions that may be warranted as a result of these allegations.”
“He’s one hell of a teacher, always proficient in his job performance,” Cavalier said. “When the sheriff called me last night I was just devastated. His career is over now. I just can’t understand why he would do something like this.”
Keith was booked into Iberville Parish Jail on Tuesday but bonded out after that day, reports WDSU. He has been placed on administrative leave due to the impending case. No further information has been released. The case is currently under investigation.
