Indiana School Bus Crash Leaves 2 Dead [Video]


A school bus crash involving students from an Indianapolis charter school has killed the driver and a 5-year-old student and sent numerous others to the hospital.

According to local police, the Indiana bus was carrying 50 children, ranging in ages from 5 to 16, to Lighthouse Charter School went it crashed into a bridge supporting a train track at about 7:45am Monday.

“Sparks started flying,” witness Daniel Maple told WTHR news. “He hit the center part of the bridge head on. I was directly on the other side of the bridge.”

Upon the arrival of paramedics, the driver of the bus, 60-year-old Thomas Spencer, and a female student, 5-year-old Donasty Smith, were pronounced dead. Fox 59 News reported that the young girl was sitting in the front of the school bus.

Rita Burris, a spokeswoman for the Indianapolis Fire District, said 10 students sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to area hospitals. The rest of the students were to be released to their parents.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
