The New York Mets have been in the news recently as their owner is in some financial hot water, and the future of the team does not seem very secure. They have also begun a fire sale by trading closer Francisco Rodriguez. However, things are not as bad as they seem. The Mets currently have a record of 46-45, and sit in third place in the National League East. They have gone 15-15 against their four divisional opponents, and went 9-9 in interleague play. The concern here will be who will be left to build around after the fire sale?
The Mets offense has scored 399 runs on 822 hits. Both of those numbers rare in the top third of the 16 NL teams. The Mets team batting average is .262 and that is third best in the senior league. Mets hitters have struck out 622 times, and drawn 323 free passes. Both of those numbers are very good, and it speaks to what this offense can do on the field. The worst BA of their regular nine starters in 3B David Wright who has missed time with injuries.
The Mets pitching staff has given up 388 runs on 797 hits, and the staff ERA is 3.95. That staff ERA is in the bottom half of the NL clubs, and three of the five regular starting pitchers for this team already have eight wins. We cannot ask for more, even though there is a fall off in the fourth and fifth starting spots. The bullpen is a concern as the staff out there all have ERA’s higher than 3.00. We expect Bobby Parnell to take over as their closer.
All in all things could be a lot worse for this team. Sure they have problems in the front office and on the field, but it seems if they can sell of some players and keep Jose Reyes that they could quickly rebuild.
