With a 45-49 record the Florida Marlins find themselves in last place in the National League East. However, that record is a bit misleading as they have gone 13-9 under new skipper Jack McKeon. Not a great improvement, but some improvement nonetheless. The big reason for their poor record is a 12-19 record against their four divisional opponents, and they only have a winning record there against the Washington Nationals. They also went 8-10 in inter league play.
The Marlins offense has scored 372 runs on 781 hits, and both of those numbers are in the bottom half of the 16 NL teams. As a team they are hitting just .246 and that ranks them 12th in their league. Marlins batters have struck out 702 times, and drawn 303 walks and those numbers rank in the top half in the senor circuit. All in all the offense doesn’t look that bad, as one of their regular nine starters is batting .300, and the rest are not doing all that badly.
The Marlins pitching staff has given up 404 runs, on 792 hits. Those numbers are not where they need to be. This staff has an ERA of 3.85 and that is just inside the top half of their league. Marlins pitchers have struck out 697 hitters and issued 302 free passes. It would seem that at times they have problems throwing strikes. Three of their starting five have six wins, and the bullpen has performed reasonably well.
