A year ago I was down on the Green Bay Packers for not taking an OLB in the second round. Since that is a chief need on this team a year later it presents a problem in evaluating this draft. They also loss two key players to injury so for now it would seem that they have earned a pass as we wait to see what this class can actually do.
A quick look at the 2010 Packers draft class:
- Round One- T Bryan Bulaga
- Round Two- DE Mike Neal
- Round Three- SS Morgan Burnett
- Round Five- TE Andrew Quarless
- Round Five- G Marshall Newhouse
- Round Six- RB James Starks
- Round Seven- DE CJ Wilson
Ok, Bulaga was good enough to start from day one, even if he is penalty prone he has won a starting job. Neal and Burnett contributed some but left with injuries. Quarless has 21 catches in a starting role after Jermichael Finley’s injury. Newhouse lost his season to back injury in December. Starks was on the PUP list for much of the season, but he really came on in the playoffs. As a backup Wilson made 18 tackles and got one sack.
We see a lot of injuries, and we see at least one starter and likely two more once injuries are taken care off. That is three starters and at least two quality backups. No one can ask more, but of course on this one the jury is still out.
