The First Dog will be a Portuguese Water Dog
After months of speculation, it’s official: the first dog will be a Portuguese Water Dog.
First Lady Michelle Obama told People magazine that the family was on the lookout for a rescued Portuguese Water Dog who is “old enough” and was a “match” for the family dynamic.
“Temperamentally they’re supposed to be pretty good,” said the First Lady. “From the size perspective, they’re sort of middle of the road – it’s not small, but it’s not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that’s where we’re leaning.”
The dog will be rescued from a shelter in April when the Obama’s take a spring break holiday.
The Portuguese Water Dog is a Portuguese bread related to the Poodle that doesn’t shed hair, so is suitable for people with allergies. The dog is known as a friendly breed suitable for families, but does require a fair bit of exercise.
