Jessica Kelly Bonnie Moran: ‘Purge’ Anti-Gay Attack On Straight Women Shocking

Two women are recovering from a vicious and unprovoked attack by a mob of teenagers on Halloween night. Jessica Kelly and Bonnie Moran were victims of a brutal assault thought to be inspired by the movie The Purge. Philadelphia authorities made arrests and say the suspects allegedly behind the attack on the women yelled anti-gay slurs, but here’s the shocker: the women claim they are heterosexuals, according to an NBC New York report.

Philly police say two teens were arrested for the “Purge-like” Halloween attack on the two women. Reportedly, an 18-year-old male and 16-year-old female are in custody and face charges of assault, battery and robbery. However, police stopped short of saying the motives behind the beatings of Jessica and Bonnie were inspired by the fictional movie or were the result of a hate crime.

As Jessica Kelly and Bonnie Moran were leaving a party Friday night in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia, a group of teens with no relation to the girls began harassing them when they reached the intersection of Erdrick and Oakmont Streets. And without warning, the mob began a full-fledged attack on Moran and Kelly.

“We were walking arm-in-arm, like most girls do, and we hear them say, ‘Look at those ugly lesbians,'” Moran said, before adding that their attackers were yelling homophobic slurs at them before and during the ordeal. However, they deny being lesbians. Kelly explains the shocking encounter.

“Taunted, stalked, followed on the street and then attacked. On top of that, robbed!”

The women described being stomped and kicked repeatedly for a period of about five minutes. As a result of the violence, they sustained a number of non-life threatening injuries: Kelly suffered two fractures to her ribs and Moran had injuries to her neck and was diagnosed with a concussion. Jessica and Bonnie believe the attacks were inspired by the 2013 movie The Purge, in which crime is legal for a period of 12 hours. During that time, police or hospitals cannot assist crime victims.

“All I kept hearing was, ‘Purge! Purge! Do it! Do it! The Purge,'” Moran said.

In the summer, Kentucky and Pennsylvania came under scares when social media chatter suggested planned anarchy in the spirit of the movie would take place. However, in both cases, it turned out to be a hoax. Still, in Kentucky, schools and local businesses went on lock-down as a precaution.

Authorities are still in search for more suspects allegedly involved in the Purge gang attack on Jessica Kelly and Bonnie Moran. If you have any information on the incident, please call Philadelphia Police.
