Cody Eugene Wygant told police in Florida that he suffocated his 1-year-old son because the boy was crying and he wanted the house quiet so he could play video games.
The Florida man was arrested on Thursday on third-degree murder charges and willful child neglect over the death of his infant son, Daymeon Wygant.
Emergency crews arrived at the house early Thursday morning after a 911 call that the boy was not breathing. Paramedics transported Daymeon to a nearby hospital, but the boy was declared dead after arriving.
In an interview with detectives, Cody Eugene Wygant admitted that he suffocated the boy so he could continue playing video games.
Police said Wygant admitted that he put his hand over the boy’s mouth and nose “for 3 to 4 minutes” because the boy was crying. Cody Eugene Wygant said he wanted the boy to be quiet so he could continue playing Xbox games.
Wygant said he then put the boy in a playpen and wrapped him in bedding “in such a way as to prevent the decedent from receiving fresh air. The father then left his son alone for five hours, during which he played Xbox and watched three episodes of the television show Fringe. By the time Cody came back to check on his son, the boy was “blue, not breathing, and unresponsive.”
But police said the brutality of this crime and the murder of an infant child was shocking even to them.
“It is inconceivable that a father could kill his infant son –it just baffles the mind,” Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said. “Our only sense of relief now comes from knowing that we did exactly what we needed to do to bring justice to him swiftly. Our prayers go out to those who knew and loved Daymeon.”
Though only 24, Cody Eugene Wygant has a long history of arrests in California for crimes ranging from trespassing to rape. If convicted of killing he son, he could face 15 years in prison.
