WWE Rumors: Will Conor McGregor Fight In ‘Wrestlemania’?

From the archive: published Nov 15, 2016, 9 years ago. Details may have changed since.

MMA fighter Conor McGregor has become a bit of a celebrity of sorts, and the latest WWE rumors suggest that the athlete and dad-to-be may be fighting in the wrestling event of the season: namely, Wrestlemania!

Newstalk 106-108 FM was the first to bring the report of these latest WWE rumors when Dave Meltzer, the noted WWE blogger and commentator, told the outlet that WWE CEO Vince McMahon is already making the motions toward McGregor’s camp to fight in Wrestlemania. And though there hasn’t been an official word yet as to whether McGregor will take McMahon up on the offer, Meltzer told Newstalk 106-108 FM that this would certainly be a ratings hit for the event.

Meltzer said the following.

“Triple H wants him. If you were in the crowd you’d want him too. There is no deal right now, but as far as I know is it being talked about? Absolutely. Probably a WrestleMania appearance. I can’t see him learning the wrestling thing. I mean why would he? They can’t pay him $40 million a year, but they can pay him for a WrestleMania appearance.”

Of course, this impending news of McGregor’s possible appearance on Wrestlemania has already netted some comments from members of the WWE camp, as the latest WWE rumors from Wrestlezone suggest. The outlet recently spoke to Hall of Famer Jim Ross, who — always good for a quote — posted a hilarious response to the Irishman’s impending visit to the WWE ring on his JR’s Bar-B-Q page.

Ross said the following.

“McGregor is the “King of the World” right now and would likely be on top of WWE’s ‘hit list’ to be a future Wrestlemania celeb participant. He’d likely cost them “Tyson Money” to get the deal done but it’s obvious that the talented Irishman is a businessman who covets the big money. Nothing wrong with that by the way, Plus, Conor sells tickets and PPV’s.”

It is entirely possible that this one-off appearance in the WWE may be the beginning of a long-term relationship with McGregor; it would be much like the relationship the company developed with former MMA fighter Brock Lesnar. However, as Ross points out, it’s a question of finances, and if McGregor is making good money in the MMA (and, according to that same report, he netted a $50,000 bonus with his recent win), it’s entirely possible that he may not be lured away from the MMA ring that easily.

If McGregor does, in fact, join the WWE for the Wrestlemania lineup, who will he fight?

According to the latest WWE rumors from Sportsrageous, no less of a contender than Roman Reigns will do.

While some wrestling fans may scoff at the idea of a Reigns-McGregor match, Sportsrageous contends that it might just be possible. We’ll recall that, not long ago, McGregor called out the entire WWE roster for being sub-par fighters, and one of the first superstars to clap back was Roman Reigns, who snarked that the Irishman was “the size of his leg” before telling him to shut up.

Also, love him or hate him, Roman Reigns is a ratings draw. Him going up against anyone, let alone a celebrity fighter of McGregor’s stature, would be a ratings bonanza. Finally, both Reigns and McGregor are great fighters, and seeing them face off against each other would attract fans of both companies.
