Roman Reigns is still trying to find his place on Raw and on WWE programming since returning from his suspension caused by a violation of the WWE Wellness Policy. Since returning to WWE television, Reigns has lost some big matches and put over other WWE Superstars like Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, and others.
It was reported by us here at The Inquisitr shortly after he dropped the WWE Championship and served his suspension that Vince McMahon was no longer as high on Roman Reigns as he had been in the past. However, it seemed that he found a spot feuding with Rusev over the United States Championship, which resulted in a very good match during a Raw main event and a huge brawl at WWE Summerslam.
Unfortunately, the rivalry with Rusev didn’t resolve due to Finn Balor’s injury that led to Reigns getting involved in the Fatal Four Way that determined the next WWE Universal Champion. Although Reigns was rumored to be the frontrunner to win the title, Kevin Owens became the WWE Universal Champion. Now, it looks like Reigns is headed back to the main event after the events that occurred during the closing moments of this week’s Raw.
As you saw above, Roman Reigns has been granted a non-title match with Kevin Owens by the Raw general manager next week. If Reigns is able to defeat Owens, he’ll be added to the already official matchup between Owens and Rollins that is set for WWE Clash of Champions later this month. Right now, Roman is pushing for a WWE Universal title match, but there are still many different ways he can go on Raw.
Very recently, it was reported here at The Inquisitr that WWE officials were considering pushing Roman Reigns back into the title picture even before Finn Balor’s injury after WWE Summerslam changed most of their plans. That is still a strong possibility, but the feud with Rusev is still unresolved and the result of next week’s match with Owens is going to determine where Roman’s character goes over the next several weeks of WWE television.
Obviously, he would assert himself back into the WWE Universal title picture by defeating Kevin Owens on Raw and he may even walk out of WWE Clash of Champions the new WWE Universal Champion. However, it is far more likely that he will lose the match with Owens. The only question is which path WWE officials will choose to book for Roman Reigns as he heads into WWE Clash of Champions.
A lot of people are expecting the United States Champion Rusev to interfere in the match and cost Reigns the opportunity, which would only add more fuel to their rivalry that can finally conclude. The most likely final result of their feud would be Reigns taking the US title from Rusev and give him a lengthy reign with a new title. However, it was revealed yesterday that Rusev will be on his honeymoon for most of September.
Despite the possibilities of those potential results, the most likely outcome of the match between Owens and Reigns next week of Raw is for Chris Jericho, who still has an alliance with Kevin Owens, to interfere and cost Roman Reigns the opportunity to challenge for the WWE Universal title at WWE Clash of Champions. The next logical step would be for WWE to book Jericho vs. Reigns for Raw’s PPV later this month.
Jericho vs. Reigns would be a solid feud for both men to have going into WWE Clash of Champions. It is unlikely that Y2J would win that match and it would only delay Roman’s return to the main event scene. Regardless, the two WWE Superstars would put on a good match, which is always useful on a PPV.
It’s been a few months since Roman Reigns got into trouble with WWE officials and Vince McMahon. After Balor’s injury and Owens’ position as the top heel, WWE will be forced to bring Roman back into the title picture sooner or later. But, a short feud with Jericho may be enough time for Rusev to return or give Reigns another big win before going head-on into capturing the U.S. title or the WWE Universal Championship.
