An old interview between President Donald Trump and legendary broadcaster Barbara Walters surfaced online this week after a viral X post praised Walters for fact-checking and answering him back for his “lies” and “delusions.”

The heated exchange took place in 1990 on ABC’s 20/20 when his book Trump: Surviving at the Top was released.

The viral clip showed a tense television exchange in which Walters repeatedly challenged Trump’s claims about his finances and business success, even though he was in a lot of debt at the time.

Talking about the title of his book, Walters said many people would rather call it “Failing at the Top,” since he was in a lot of debt and had to pay back large sums of money.

Trump, unhappy with her comment, criticized the media entirely and said:

“I hope the general public understands how inherently dishonest the press in this country is.”

Walter pushed back instantly and replied:

“As a member of the press, let me try to clear up some of the things which you say are untrue.”

She then went on to read an excerpt from the book:

“My bankers and I worked out a terrific deal that allows me to come out stronger than ever. I see the deal as a great victory.”

This led her to question Trump’s credibility. She stopped reading and questioned Trump instantly:

“Being on the verge of bankruptcy, being bailed out by the banks, skating on thin ice and almost drowning? That’s a businessman to be admired?”

Trump tries to interrupt her many times and ultimately gets to say:

“You say ‘on the verge of bankruptcy,’ Barbara,” “And you talk ‘on the verge,’ and you listen to what people are saying—”

But before he could complete his sentence, Walters chimed in:

“I talked to your bankers.”

Trump then tried to defend himself and claimed every banker will have a different answer, so “depending on the banker” Walters talked to, she’s forming her opinion.

However, the legendary reporter said she spoke to “several” bankers with the same answers.

An evidently struck-out Trump changed the question and said people only write about him, and there’s no one else they write about.

Walters instantly fired back and said:

“You have a little more debt than most people. You have something like $3 billion in debt.”

“You have debts to pay back. You have huge loans to pay back.”

Trump brought in his assets and claimed he had more than others. Walters then suggested that the bankers thought the only way Trump could pay off his debt and loans is by selling the Plaza Hotel. She said:

“Your bankers have told us is that the only way you even have a chance is by selling that property out there totally, the plaza.”

Trump praised the Plaza Hotel investment and said it is a valuable deal that people initially criticized.

“The plaza’s a very valuable property. Everybody told me, Oh, you paid too much, you paid too much. Now they’re all saying, What a great deal he made on the plaza.”

Walters bluntly replied, “No, they’re not.”

The interview garnered significant traction, and viewers were left criticizing Trump for being a liar since the start and praising Walters for tactfully handling him.

“He was a bullshi–er all his life…it was always there but no one paid attention.”

“Donald Trump’s only gift: the art of the steal. All he’s ever done all his pathetic fraudulent life is steal from others.”
