Tom Hanks has teased one of the most “heartbreaking” scenes in the much-awaited Toy Story 5, and it looks like the final instalment in the beloved animated franchise is set to be a poignant yet emotional tearjerker.
Hanks, the voice of Sheriff Woody’s character, joined Toy Story cast members Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) and Joan Cusack (Jessie) at the film’s U.K. launch event. During the event, Hanks revealed that the film will touch upon an extremely relevant subject in the current digital age: cyberbullying.
The Disney-Pixar movie will explore the impact of technology and the internet, as it follows the story of nine-year-old Bonnie, who gets her first tablet. Buzz and Jessie worry that, enamoured with the virtual world, their owner would stop making friends in real life and ultimately, abandon them.
“That’s a very prescient thing to have in a motion picture today about little kids and toys, don’t you think?”

Now, speaking about the film at the launch event, Tom Hanks said that it has one of the most heartbreaking scenes he has seen in any of the movies in the franchise. “These movies, they end up speaking [to] and puts in words [and] stuff that everybody is thinking anyway,” Hanks, 69, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“There’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen in any of the Toy Story movies — when that little girl is getting her feelings hurt by what other people are texting about her, and she doesn’t understand why,” the actor continued, adding, “She doesn’t know what she did wrong, but it hurts, and that is a very prescient thing to have in a motion picture today about little kids and toys, don’t you think?”
Adding to Hanks’ observation, Allen spoke about the importance of teaching today’s kids to be more present and engaged in their lives, beyond just being on an electronic device. “You can’t make people play again, but you can show them that the engagement with toys and engagement with your life and your friends is a little more satisfying than being on your device,” the actor said.

I am literally begging,” wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter. “Toy Story 3 and 4 already ripped my heart out and threw it in the trash, now they’re adding a plotline about a kid dealing with group chat cyberbullying?” they added.

A fourth user said, “grew up with toy story so this is already destroying me before I even buy the ticket 😭” “If Tom Hanks is saying that, it’s probably going to hit hard. Sounds like Toy Story 5 is going to get emotional in a very modern way,” another tweet read.

“Pixar is really about to break our hearts all over again, aren’t they? Tackling cyberbullying and tech through the eyes of the toys is going to be absolutely devastating,” yet another netizen added. One user still had their hopes up, as they wrote, “Im looking forward to the toys smashing the ipad.”
Directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris, Toy Story 5 will release theatrically on June 19, 2026.
