A 21-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder of his mother in Florida. Gibson Nash beat his mother, Margaret Dufour, and then strangled her to death in a home they had both recently moved into. After the murder of his mother, Nash stole her 2022 BMW and went on a hit-and-run spree, impacting multiple vehicles.

However, this wasn’t the first time the mentally struggling 21-year-old had been so violent. Dufour had bailed him out of jail on July 14. She was determined to get better care for her ill son, but was also aware of his extreme tendencies. Earlier, she had locked herself in a smoke shop bathroom and called Knoxville police on her son.

Nash did not like his mother trying to stop him from playing Xbox. She told them her son had assaulted her and threatened to kill her with a knife. At that time, he was arrested in Tennessee, but the related charges were dropped later. This time, Nash succeeded in killing his loving mother, who had moved to Eagle Creek a week before to ensure better medical care for her son.

 

Police found his 56-year-old mother lying in a pool of blood on July 21. Nash allegedly stomped on her and strangled her to death.

The investigation also revealed a neighbor heard two loud thuds at Dufour’s home around 4:30 a.m. Family members told authorities about Nash’s violent outbursts. He had bruises on his knuckles and feet.

Florida authorities first identified him after he hit multiple cars, got into a speeding accident, and collided with another vehicle. The first responders took him to the hospital, where the staff noticed he had blood on his hands and shoes.

This caused suspicion as he wasn’t injured in the accident. The staff alerted the authorities and also found Nash had overdosed on Tylenol that day, causing liver failure. Florida police found that the car was in Dufour’s name, who had started working with a local hospital as a nurse.

The DNA of blood found on Nash’s hands and shoes matched his mom. Moreover, he was covered in bruises that may have been caused by the lethal force he used to kill his mother. 

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a press conference: 

“Gibson Nash needs to remain locked away from the public forever. The way he murdered his mother was a mix of pure rage and extreme violence.”

He further added, “She had a new house. She had a new job. She was a wonderful lady. She was a great mother. She would not give up on him even after he threatened to kill her, pulled knives on her, hit her, and attacked her.”

Nash was sedated and intubated with liver failure. Once Nash’s health showed signs of improvement, he was charged with first-degree murder. Currently, he’s at the hospital and will be taken to Polk County Jail after his release from the medical facility.
