OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA – A Christian University in California was the setting of a deadly shooting this afternoon. A gunmen opened fire at Oikos University today leaving six people dead and wounding another five. Police currently have a suspect in custody.
Police have not officially said how many people were killed in the attack but Oakland City Council President Larry Reid said that he was told that by police that at least six people were killed.
Officer Johnna Watson said:
“We just received information that we believe that we detained a possible suspect who’s responsible for the shooting today; again that’s just a detention… We do believe this person may be responsible for this shooting and that’s what we’re following up with our investigators and our officers are looking into the details of that right now. I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting.”
Watson didn’t give any details about the suspect but the Associated Press reported earlier that police had detained a heavyset Korean man in his 40s. Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, said that the shooter was a former nursing student and was no longer enrolled at the school.
Details about the shooting are hazy at the moment but KTVU-TV reports that the shooting occurred in one of the classrooms at Oikos.
