Sean Reifel, a contestant on Season 8 of Love Island USA, left his job as a police officer in Pennsylvania to join the popular dating reality show. Soon after his casting was announced last week, his decision sparked debate in his hometown. While Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds publicly criticized the move, Reifel’s mother quickly came to his defense.

Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds criticized Reifel’s decision to leave his position even before completing one-year with the department. While speaking with Fox 8, Reynolds said, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.” He went on to point out the alleged expenses incurred by the department training him.

“Our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” he added, further stating that nobody could be appointed in the vacant position until next year.

The news update was also shared on the Instagram page Entertainment Tonight; an internet user who identified herself as Reifel’s mother issued a long clarification in the comments section.

She stated that the mayor’s remarks made her “very sad,” noting that he failed to recognize what he viewed as a major missed opportunity. She then alleged that the Love Island USA contestant was put on leave and refuted claims that the department was entirely paying for her son.

She said the Love Island USA contestant had worked as a Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputy since April 2021 and noted that the department had invested in his academy training, adding that some important details had not been fully disclosed. “I’m proud of my son. It is a brave decision to put yourself out there to find love under the microscope of the world,” she added.

Additionally, several internet users also defended the officer’s decision, with one user stating, “He’s now the REASON we will be watching! Thank you, Mayor,” while another said, “I’m sorry but in this economy… I would do the same thing.” A third user commented, “So a person has to prioritize their work over their personal life? That’s not how right. Let him live.”

It is worth mentioning that Reynolds welcomed Reifel with a huge smile and anticipation to the department in August 2025 with a special post on social media.

On the other hand, while speaking with the BBC, Reifel’s former boss, Police Chief Michelle Kott, also expressed disappointment “in losing another police officer.” He explained that the department has 16 officer vacancies and Reifel’s decision didn’t appeal to him.

The police chief added that law enforcement agencies nationwide experience massive recruiting and retention challenges, stressing that every vacancy impacts the organization and the community being served.

Surprisingly, while there was an uproar over Riefel’s decision to join the dating show, he turned out to be the first contestant to be evicted from the glamorous Fiji Villa. According to Cosmopolitan, his sister Brice Marie stated that she “cried” while watching the show, and it is hard for her to see her brother getting “upset.”

The show is currently streaming on Peacock.
