Ryan Tannehill , the rookie quarterback, has earned the Miami Dolphins’ starting job, according to an announcement following Monday’s practice made by first-year coach Joe Philbin.
Tannehill will start during the Dolphins’ opener on September 9, beating out last year’s starter Matt Moore, reports The Washington Post .
Training camp began as a three-way competition for the starting quarterback job, but veteran player David Garrard lost his opportunity when he underwent minor knee surgery August 11, leaving Tannehill and Moore to fight for the position.
Tannehill was drafted with the eighth overall pick this year, making him the first quarterback taken in the first round by the Dolphins since they picked Dan Marino in 1983. Tannehill played at Texas A&M before being picked up by the NFL. Philbin stated of his new quarterback that, “We like a lot of things about him. He has a chance to be a very good player.”
Philbin made the announcement naming Ryan Tannehill as starting quarterback, according to The Sun-Sentinel , saying:
“After a thorough evaluation of the quarterback position we’ve come to the decision that Ryan Tannehill is our starting quarterback. It was a close competition, but in the end we feel that this is the best decision for our football team at the present time.”
While he did call Tannehill the starting quarterback, Philbin added that:
“Ryan Tannehill’s our starter. I told you guys David Garrard was our starter and two days later he (suffered a knee injury). He’s our starter right now. David Garrard, when he comes back we’ll see what happenes, but right now this is where we’re at.”
