Russell Wilson Doesn’t Know Diddly About Baseball, Says Bo

Russell Wilson — since leading the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bow l win in early February — has hinted around that a career in baseball might be in his future. Of course, any time a player has visions of playing both football and baseball, the inevitable comparisons to former superstar Bo Jackson will come.
Like Russell Wilson, Bo was a superstar football player. Unlike Russell, Jackson also had a successful career as a baseball player for the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago White Sox.
But just because Bo did it, that doesn’t mean he thinks that Wilson should try it. Here is what he said to CSNChicago.com:
“Stick to what got [Wilson] in the headlines, not baseball. Twenty-five or 30 years ago when I did it, I’m not trying to say anything negative about other athletes, but the talent pool wasn’t that deep.
“In this day and age, with all the high-tech training, computer-engineered workouts and the proper food and diet, if you try to concentrate on two sports, I guarantee you’re going to ride the bench in both because the talent is that deep. Stick to whatever sport you’re comfortable with and let everything else go.”
Of course, Wilson has only flirted with the idea of playing baseball. It’s hard to blame him. Wilson last played baseball in 2011 when Russell played A ball for the Colorado Rockies. Russell had some success, but only hit.229 — certainly far short of what he has been able to accomplish on the football field.
For the record, Wilson doesn’t seem too likely to hang up his football cleats for baseball spikes. Here is what Russell has said about playing baseball:
“You never say never. I’ve always had the dream of playing two sports. If somehow it was a miracle that it could work out, I’d consider it. At the same time, my focus is winning the championship with the Seattle Seahawks and hope to be playing for a long time.”
It sounds like Seahawks fans shouldn’t be concerned about Wilson trying to split his time between the two sports too soon. After all, Russell is on the cusp of what could be a hall-of-fame career.
For what it’s worth, Bo doesn’t think that he — like Wilson — could compete in today’s game in trying to do two sports.
“I probably couldn’t, no. If you try to do both you’re going to be riding the bench in both. You’ll never get to that level that you want to get to if you split your time between multiple sports.”
What do you think? Should Russell Wilson give baseball another go or should he stay content with football? Do you think Wilson could be successful in both sports?
