Los Angeles has been under protests for almost three days now. The LA protest is against the ICE- immigration and customs enforcement officers who are strategically raiding Latinos in the area. It started on June 6th, and on the 9th, the protests got heated when President Donald Trump ordered 2000 National Guard troops, along with 700 Marines, to the city.
Earlier, Trump had launched a large-scale deportation operation in the country to restore America. He blames previous president and his administration for allowing several immigrants to come into the country. And now he says he is cleaning up the mess they made.
Him deploying national guards has received backlash not just from people but also from the California governor Gavin Newsom. He warned the president that marines should not be against their own Countrymen. He called this un-American and cited it as a deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president.
Amidst the LA protest, a CNN reporter, Jason Carroll, was detained by the police while live on air. He was reporting the jarring details of the protest right before he was detained.
He repeated on air, “I am being detained. I’m being detained.”

Then he asks the officers if he’s being arrested. The police officer further asked him if he had heard what they had said. After him saying no, the officer repeats that he’s being let go this time, but he cannot come back. If he comes back, he will be attested.
He was also on air and spoke to the studio saying how he was called over and the officer asked him to put his hands behind his back. He asked if he was being arrested but he was just being detained and they took his information while letting him go quickly.
Meanwhile, his audio was cut off, and the two camera crew members were arrested. He could communicate only after coming outside the protest area. He got to explain the events that led him to get detained. He was not put in zip ties, but they grabbed both his hands as he was escorted to the side, where they explained to him about getting detained. He tried to tell the officer who he was but to no avail.

It has been seen that in some areas, federal officers are targeting journalists while they are just covering the news. So they could be doing their job and still get detained. This violates the First Amendment rights of journalists as they are trying to get the news to the people.
27 press and civil liberties groups also wrote about this to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. This is an alarming situation and needs to be addressed. Several reports are suggesting that officers are using force, pepper balls, and tear gas to deter journalists.
