Nebraska football player Mekhi Nelson was arrested in Florida on Monday, June 29, 2026, after Monroe County police officers responded to a hotel after reports of a domestic disturbance.

Nelson spoke to police officers outside the hotel room alongside his girlfriend. He told them he was the stepdad to her child and that she was pregnant with another.

When officers asked about his background and the events that led to the disturbance call, Nelson discussed his academic record at length. He told the officer, “I’m taking two summer classes right now. So, it’s just going to show my two classes. And I have a 3.7 GPA. I was an academic all-American. I was on the Big 10 honor roll. I was given the highest honors.”

A second officer also spoke with him candidly. “Listen, these are the types of things you don’t need, okay? This getting drunk and carrying on I know you’re not drinking today. This thing, these arguments, police involvement. I know the police have been involved with you too before,” the officer said. 

He further added, “I’m going to be completely honest with you. The only thing keeping you out of jail right now is you just told us you didn’t hit her today.”

The female officer noted that Nelson’s girlfriend’s bathing suit was ripped and that she had scratches on her body. The two had argued about how long she was taking to get ready, and the argument became physical.

Nelson was arrested, with the officer calling the incident “messy violence.” His girlfriend came to defense him, saying, “He didn’t hit me.” The officer replied, “He ripped the bathing suit off of you. That counts. And you have marks. It’s domestic violence.”

While he was getting handcuffed, he pleaded to call his mom for help. He became increasingly anxious and began crying on the call. “But I’m just like my dad. I’m in the back of a cop car. I’m just like my dad,” he said.


While speaking to his mother, he said his girlfriend was not with him, to which she replied, “I was on the phone with her. She called me immediately.”

Nelson was initially charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant victim. According to the court records, no formal charges were filed as of July 14, and the case was closed. His girlfriend did not pursue the matter.

A bodycam video of the incident was shared on the Police Cam YouTube channel and has accumulated over 7,000 views at the time of publication. Many viewers criticized the man over his behavior. One viewer commented, “These 2 people don’t belong together.”

“I’ll never understand the craze to call Mom or Dad when you’re an adult. I’d be doubly embarrassed to have them learn of such,” wrote a fourth. One viewer sarcastically suggested, “It’s pretty easy to avoid a DV charge; keep your hands to yourself during an argument/disagreement.” Since the charges against him were dropped, there was no legal action, and he was back to playing football on his team.
