A skull leads police to the unexpected killer. For six years, the disappearance of a local man haunted Spain’s quiet southern town of Coín. What began as a missing person’s case during the global pandemic has now transformed into one of the region’s most chilling murder mysteries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a man named Francisco José Agüera, 59, suddenly vanished without a trace from his town in Spain.

Despite the police searching for him, he was nowhere to be found. The victim’s neighbors grew worried about his disappearance and called local authorities, who then contacted his sisters.

In April 2020, one of his sisters visited his home with police officers, but no one was inside. His house was untouched. His personal items were still there, and food was left in the fridge. The case made headlines in Spain. However, while people slowly forgot him and authorities tried to paint it as just another missing person’s case, his family remained convinced he did not disappear on his own.

The cold case took a critical turn in 2025 following a gruesome discovery in Coín, a town in the province of Málaga. Local workers uncovered a bag containing a human skull, reviving the long-dormant investigation at the bottom of a utility chamber in the Pinos de Alhaurín urbanization. 

Police launched “Operation Capibara” to investigate the human remains. On July 28, officers arrested the victim’s friend. Authorities used criminal databases, document analysis, and court-approved technological methods to identify the suspect.

After his arrest, the suspect admitted that he murdered Agüera at his home, chopped up the body, and hid the body parts in different locations around the town. The suspect confessed to the Spanish Civil Guards that he killed his friend at his home. He then chopped up the body and hid the remains in several places around the town.

According to the Irish Mirror, the man then led officers directly to the exact spots where he had hidden the body parts. The suspect appeared in court last week. He invoked his right and chose to remain silent. The judge ordered him held in jail without bail on homicide charges.

The horrific nature of the crime shocked people across Spain. One Instagram user commented, “Yo no sé como alguien que hace eso es capaz de dormir por las noches.” (I don’t know how someone who does that is able to sleep at night)

Another user added, “Qué hígado hay qué tener para descuartizar a un humano y a un.” (What liver does one have to have to quart a human and a friend)

A separate comment on Facebook read, “No veas. Tirar una cabeza humana en una bolsa. Tenemos la provincia llena de gentuza del peor nivel. Maravillosa nuestra democracia.” (Unbelievable. Dumping a human head in a bag. The province is crawling with the worst kind of lowlifes. Our democracy is just wonderful.)
