A convicted felon triggered a police car chase when he fled the traffic stop and opened fire on the officers. Multiple police officers chased after the felon as well as his accomplices in Oklahoma City.
The car chase went on overnight, starting from Northwest 10th Street and May Avenue. At first, the felon assured officers his weapon wasn’t loaded, but proceeded to run away from the stop. The officers noticed his license plate light wasn’t working, and he wasn’t supposed to have a weapon as a convicted felon.
The officer asked him to exit the vehicle, but he did not comply. The police officer told him, “Hey, step out. Just listen. Okay. Step out of the car. I’m not going to ask you again. Or just open the door.”
Once he fled the scene, the officers called for backup. Soon they realized that he had help from his uncle and his partner. When he reached 24th and Kentucky, he got into his partner’s vehicle, and they took off from there.
Together, they were trying to distract the officers to prevent him from getting caught. As the chase progressed, there was crossfire between the police and the felon.
Despite the crossfire, authorities reported no one was injured, but a gunshot hit one police vehicle. One officer noted, “He’s in the other car. He dropped the other car. His car was jacked up.” The officers were trying to set up a perimeter to arrest him.
Identified as 26-year-old Devin Johnson, he was trying to reach home. But the officers caught him near Southwest 22nd Street and Kentucky Place. They also arrested his partner, 28-year-old Portia Offiah. The uncle was also detained, but he was set free without any charges.
Meanwhile, Johnson and Offiah were booked at the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Offiah was charged with harboring a fugitive from justice and endangering others while attempting to elude a police officer. She pleaded not guilty, and her bail was set at $5,000.
According to her plea deal, she got a 5-year sentence. Johnson was charged with two counts of shooting with intent to kill, endangering people while trying to elude police, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and possessing a firearm as a felon.
Initially, he pleaded not guilty, but later he entered a plea deal in exchange for dropping charges of shooting with intent to kill. He was sentenced to spend 12 years in an Oklahoma prison.
