Both Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have moved on from their failed reality show The Newlyweds and their subsequent failed marriage. Since splitting up in 2005, the pair have remarried and have children of their own.

While we didn’t expect Nick Lachey to sulk about his previous marriage, we certainly didn’t expect him to come out and say it was “the best thing” he and Simpson didn’t procreate.

That said, one can understand why Lachey thinks this. After all, he has a beautiful child with wife Vanessa Lachey, and is about to father a second child with the former MTV VJ. So what made Nick get on the topic of his famous ex? Well, the 98 Degrees frontman stopped by Jenny McCarthy’s SiriusXM radio show, and McCarthy decided to bring the topic up.

According to E! Online , the singer said, “I think in our situation, that was probably the best thing that could have ever happened is that we didn’t have kids.”

Lachey continued, “All things being equal, it was the best thing probably for the both of us that we went on with our lives and she’s obviously happily married with two [kids]. I’m happy married about to have two so it all worked out the way it was supposed to work out.”

Nick and Jessica were pop music’s long enduring couple, after Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake called it quits in 2002. Simpson and Lachey started dating in 1999 and split briefly, before reconciling in the early millennium. The pair married in 2002, and were one of the first couples to have their own reality series, which was appropriately titled The Newlyweds . However, the show caused strain for the couple, and along with other underlying issues the two decided to part ways. They officially became divorced in 2006.

Although it was a very public split, Lachey said there’s no animosity towards Jessica.

“We’ve both moved on with our lives and I think we’re very happy with the way it went. It’s not animosity, it’s not friendship, it’s just kind of nothing.”

This isn’t the first time he spoke about his ex. When Nick was on Watch What Happens Live! , host Andy Cohen asked what was the best part of no longer having Joe Simpson as a father-in-law.

Nick humorously replied, “I don’t have to play grab ass under the table on Easter Sunday.”

What do you think about Nick’s new comments about his life after Jessica Simpson?
