Trigger Warning: This article contains references to a child accident that some readers may find distressing.
A five-year-old New York boy survived a harrowing plunge from a high-rise apartment building window in the Bronx on Sunday evening, leaving witnesses and prompting an active investigation into how the child bypassed installed safety guards, authorities said.
The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, outside an apartment near the intersection of Davidson Avenue and Buchanan Place in the University Heights section of the Bronx.
The officers from the New York Police Department and the emergency services discovered the child lying motionless on the pavement; he had injuries to the head and face, the result of a fall from a certain height.

Bystanders standing along Davidson Avenue described hearing a sharp impact before discovering the injured child on the pavement.
“His face was all swollen on this side. He was like, you can tell he got hit bad. We were trying to figure out where he came from.”

Crime scene tape quickly cordoned off the corner of Buchanan Place as detectives launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the drop. Initial investigative reports presented conflicting accounts regarding the exact origin point, with early sources pointing to a fourth-floor window while subsequent reports indicated the fifth floor.

A central focus of the investigation remains the building’s physical safety barriers. The building superintendent confirmed that window guards, mandatory safety features under New York City law designed to prevent youth falls, were installed on the window in question. Preliminary findings suggest the young boy managed to climb the structure and squeeze through the narrow clearance.
Four children have fallen from New York City windows in the last five months, making for a distressing situation that is making some politicians request the mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, to pay attention to “basic, everyday issues” that New Yorkers have rather than “needless political theater.”
Amazingly, all four children managed to survive the fall.
Officers at the scene gathered evidence and questioned residents regarding parental supervision at the time of the fall. Medical personnel at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital stabilized the child, who remains in stable condition while recovering from his injuries.
