The New York Times company has reached a settlement over a lawsuit from community newspaper publisher Gatehouse Media over linking.
The lawsuit from Gatehouse, filed just before Christmas argued that The New York Times Co, through the Boston Globe (Boston.com) violated copyright law by copying headlines and the first sentence from articles in the Newton Tab, Daily News Tribune of Waltham, and other GateHouse papers. GateHouse also claims illegal use of trademarks as Boston.com also named the papers when linking to them.
In short, the alleged crime was linking.
Under the terms of the settlement, neither party paid damages or admitted any wrongdoing.
It’s just a shame it didn’t go to court so the insanity could have been put to bed properly.
