A new political action committee has declared its intention to return a presidential beard to the White House.
The US election watchdog has revealed the PAC, one that exclusively supports bearded candidates, intends to push for a hairier US president (and officials at all political levels) in the future.
Beards have gone out of fashion for US presidents in recent years decades centuries. It’s been 120 years since the handsomely bearded Benjamin Harrison (above) departed the White House, with a long line of clean-shaven gents occupying the Oval Office ever since.
That’s something the non-partisan Bearded Entrepreneurs for the Advancement of a Responsible Democracy ( BEARD ) intends to fix. Founded by 30-year-old Jonathan Sessions, the PAC has now registered with the Federal Elections Committee and, according to its Facebook page, “will act to independently support the candidacies of bearded candidates nationwide.”
In a statement released this week, the PAC said:
“With the resurgence of beards in popular culture and among today’s younger generation, we believe the time is now to bring facial hair back into politics.”
Pointing out that there hasn’t been a bearded major-party presidential candidate since Republican Charles Evans Hughes’ unsuccessful bid in 1916, it continued:
“Our hope is that we can start to reverse this disturbing trend. It’s been 125 years since our last bearded president, Benjamin Harrison, was elected. We’re hoping that, with our support, bearded individuals will shrug off over a century of political irrelevance and start running for office again.”
While the new PAC might seem to exclude women somewhat, it’s also difficult to argue for the lack of White House whiskers in recent years.
