Niger officials are reporting that al-Saadi, the son of ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi passed into neighboring Niger on Saturday night, marking yet another top ranking official who has decided to flee the area.
The 37-year-old son of Moammar entered the country with a convoy of nine other people according to Niger Justice Minister Amadou Morou.
Mourou said of the situation:
“I wish to announce that one of Gadhafi’s sons — al-Saadi Gadhafi — was intercepted in the north of Niger by a patrol of the Nigerien military.”
When asked if al-Saadi was welcomed in the county with refugee status which would grant him certain rights Mourou responded that he:
“Has no status at all in Niger.”
al-Saadi isn’t the first member of the Ghadafi convoy to be discovered crossing into the region, Libyan officials for former leader Moammar Ghadafi have been flying into Niger since last week. Among those who have fled include Moammar’s chief of security and his head of southern command.
At this time Niger has done nothing to turn over those officials, as a result they are under heavy scrutiny for their decisions from international agencies who would like to see those top ranking former Libyan officials brought to justice.
Members who have not managed to escape are being captured and detained by Libya’s new leaders.
Gadhafi ruled Libya for 42-years before Rebel forces officially ended his reign of terror last week.
In the meantime the new leadership has been given $800 million in frozen Ghadafi funds that were being held in Britain with another $500 million payment expected in the near future.
