Mitt Romney ‘s win in Texas on Tuesday has helped him to clinch the GOP nomination, as he now has enough delegates going into the National Republican Convention.
The Associated Press count puts Romney over the 1,144 delegates required to win the nomination, following his win of at least 88 delegates in Texas.
The Huffington Post reports that his success can be attributed by his constant message of concern about the U.S. economy, and also having a campaign organization that was only second to President Barack Obama’s.
Romney, once the results are official at the national convention, would be the first Mormon to be nominated by a major political party. When learning of his win in Texas, Mitt Romney stated:
“I am honored that Americans across the country have given their support to my candidacy and I am humbled to have won enough delegates to become the Republican Party’s 2012 presidential nominee.”
According to The Washington Post, Richard Lyman Bushman, a leading Mormon scholar and longtime acquaintance of Romney’s stated that:
“If you look at it in a historical perspective, it’s absolutely incredible. A century-and-a-half ago, Mormons were detested as a people as well as a religion. They were thought to be primitive and crude. And now to have someone overcome all the lingering prejudice, that’s a milestone.”
Romney, on learning of his win, also stated that:
“Our party has come together with the goal of putting the failures of the last three and a half years behind us. I have no illusions about the difficulties of the task before us. But whatever challenges lie ahead, we will settle for nothing less than getting America back on the path to full employment and prosperity.”
Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, was quick to make her opinion known about the supposed nominee. When speaking about the fact that Trump and Romney disagree on Obama’s true birthplace, she stated:
“If Mitt Romney lacks the backbone to stand up to a charlatan like Donald Trump because he’s so concerned about lining his campaign’s pockets, what does that say about the kind of president he would be?”
