Alabama man who bit a dog back while being bitten by a police K-9 dog has divided the internet. A 12-minute long body cam footage showed David Culliver, aged 46, of Sheffield resisting arrest as the officers tried to apprehend him. That said, despite the chaotic ordeal, Culliver was never part of the investigation. He chose to voluntarily get involved and inturn disrupted it.

The incident occured on April 22 when a Drug Task Force executed a search warrant in N. Locus Street in Florence, Alabama. The FPD released a statement on Facebook, revealing what led to the arrest of Culliver. “Culliver was not involved in the investigation and inserted himself into the situation,” the statement read. “He became belligerent, yelled at officers, and stepped into an active roadway with flowing traffic. An officer advised Culliver several times to get out of the roadway so he wouldn’t get hit by a vehicle.”

According to News19, Culliver continued to disrupt traffic despite the officers’ warnings. Officers then placed Culliver under arrest as they tried to restrain him with handcuffs but the 46-year-old resisted the arrest, leading to three officers trying to pin him down. This led to a police K-9 being deployed to aid in the arrest. The dog ended up biting Culliver on his thigh as three officers tried to pin him down and arrest him.

However, as things seemed to calm down, Culliver retaliated by biting the dog back on its leg. “Culliver grabbed one of the K-9’s legs and bit the K-9,” the official statement revealed. “Officers struck Culliver to get him to release the Florence Police K-9. Culliver was taken to the ground and placed into handcuffs. Culliver was transported to the North Alabama Medical Center where he was treated for the K-9 puncture wounds. After receiving treatment, he was transported and booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center.”

A K-9 or a police dog’s bite is a serious injury that needs to be looked at my medical professionals immediately. Despite the brutal training, the dogs are put through, their bites can still be “catastrophic.” There have been cases of people being bitten by K-9s even though they posed no threat. A K-9 bite can lead to severe tissue damage or in Culliver’s case, a puncutre wound. Following the medical treatment, David Culliver was transported to Lauderdale County Detention Center where he is being held on a $2,500 bond as of writing.

Police Chief Mike Holt addressed the sensitive matter, stating that the canine was “deployed” to prevent “further escalation of required force.” Holt shed light on the fact that Culliver was intoxicated and continued to resist physically. “I think it’s important to remember that Mr. Culliver had the option not to resist, which would have prevented the need to use force,” the police chief said.
