Where oh where did I put my Moon Rock? A long-lost lunar rock from Apollo 17 was found by an archivist in Arkansas as he was searching through Bill Clinton’s gubernatorial papers. The rock, which is worth millions of dollars, has been lost since the 1980s.
The rock was one of 50 Goodwill Moon Rocks handed out to each state in the 1970s.
Bobby Roberts, the director of the Central Arkansas Library System, said that the archivist found the Goodwill Moon Rock in a box marked “Arkansas Flag Plaque.” Fox reports that the rock and a state flag were originally attached to the plaque, but the rock must have fallen off. Roberts said that the rock was found at the bottom of the box.
Roberts said:
“The moon rock, which is in a plastic container, had fallen off the plaque. The archivist immediately knew what he had discovered.”
According to Roberts, the moon rock was presented to Arkansas Gov. David Pryor in 1976. Clinton would soon move into the Governor’s office, but in 1980 when he lost re-election, the moon rock must have been packed away with the rest of Clinton’s things.
Roberts said:
“We will talk to the Clinton Foundation and office and determine where it should be. It should definitely be in a museum.”
NBC reports that Clinton isn’t the only person to misplace a moon rock. New Jersey and Alaska are both still looking for their Goodwill Moon Rocks.
Should the lunar rock head back to the Governor’s Office in Arkansas? Should it be placed in a museum?
