Hollywood’s heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio surprised fans with a noticeably slimmer and more polished look at The 98 Academy Awards, held March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Titanic actor wore a black tuxedo with a white shirt, finished with a Rolex and a bee pin on his collar. Yet, the star of the show was his moustache. Social media users were surprised to see a notable transformation at 51.
According to The List, online users had mixed reactions ranging from a series of witty humor to wholesome compliments. One user wrote, “The glow up needs to be studied,” while another joked, “He decided to be ugly for, like, seven years for no reason at all.”

A few others wondered what the real reason could be behind the refreshed appearance. “Leonardo DiCaprio looked around and decided to get hot again to boost morale.”
Others believed lifestyle changes played a role. “Finally quit the sauce and discovered water. Also, the moustache is carrying 40% of this comeback,” one user joked. Fans also shared theories about how DiCaprio achieved his refreshed appearance. Some suggested he may have tried gua sha, a traditional Chinese skincare technique using a smooth stone to sculpt the face.
As one of the most attractive actors of all time, the world has seen his transition from the boyish era of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when iconic roles like Jack Dawson in Titanic and Romeo in Romeo + Juliet came out. With long blond hair, a symmetrical face, and almond-shaped eyes with a slight natural hooded or heavy upper lid, DiCaprio’s face card has never declined (pun intended).

However, with age and several life changes, DiCaprio was mocked for a drastic change in his once leaner, toned physique, shifting from a fit and muscular body type in The Wolf of Wall Street to a more relaxed and fuller figure with a visible belly. By 2014, paparazzi photos of him shirtless on beaches from Bora Bora to Miami circulated, showing images of him taken at awkward angles, making him look older.
The term “dad bod” was soon associated with Leonardo DiCaprio, like many middle-aged men who were out of shape and appeared laid-back. The ideal definition of a dad bod refers to men who have a larger lower body and a belly that stands out, which people often believe comes from excessive and prolonged drinking and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

However, when it came to DiCaprio, scrutiny and opinions about his body reached discussion and Q&A platforms like Quora, Reddit, and TikTok. Many claimed the LA native was “aging terribly” and compared him to his youthful and “pretty boy” persona.
Others compared him to his contemporaries and defended DiCaprio. His fans claimed he has aged well and has gone through normal changes like “looser skin, deeper lines around the mouth, jowls, changes in where fat sits on the face, and slower skin repair.”
Several long-term fans noted that paparazzi photos are often taken in poor lighting or from unflattering angles, and the actor may appear tired after a long shoot.
Online users also pointed out that aging is natural, and Leonardo DiCaprio displays natural signs of growing old rather than indications of poor health. Either way, weight alone cannot determine a person’s overall health or fitness levels.
The climate change activist’s relentless scrutiny over changes in appearance is a perfect example of how male celebrities can also be judged for their evolving image.
As for DiCaprio, he has largely stayed silent on the “dad bod” claims, but he has acknowledged the brutal reality of fame, once noting that public scrutiny is simply part of being a movie star and, as a commodity of the masses, a star must learn to handle and live with it.
