John Stamos Pays His Respects To Network Television: RIP ‘Grandfathered’

From the archive: published May 13, 2016, 10 years ago. Details may have changed since.

John Stamos is going to Disneyland. The 52-year-old TV veteran posted his response to the cancellation of his Fox sitcom, Grandfathered, by posting a smiley picture of himself in front of Cinderella’s castle at the famous theme park.

“Hey, John Stamos! Fox just cancelled your television show, what are you going to do next?” Stamos captioned the snap.

While the picture could be taken as a tease that Disney’s got his back (take that, Fox!), Stamos’ Disney trip was actually with his Grandfathered co-star Josh Peck and little Layla and Emelia Golfieri, the adorable twins who play baby Edie on the now-canceled series. But the timing couldn’t have been better, and it was classic John Stamos as he made light of a situation that would have most actors down in the dumps.

In addition to his Disneyland selfie, Stamos took to Twitter to pay his respects to the demise of network television in general — indeed, TV’s “Bloody Thursday” saw the axing of everything from Castle and CSI to Grandfathered and The Grinder — and to reiterate how proud he was of his Fox sitcom and promise that he will continue to make shows that the entire family can watch.

Grandfathered was John Stamos’ baby. After playing Elvis-lovin’ Uncle Jesse for eight years on Full House, the actor told TV Guide he had been waiting a decade to do a show like Grandfathered. Stamos executive produced and starred on the Fox comedy, playing confirmed bachelor and restaurant owner Jimmy Martino, a playboy who finds out he has a grown son and a baby granddaughter he never knew about. Paget Brewster played Stamos’ character’s baby mama, Sara, and Josh Peck played his adult son, Gerald.

“This is literally the show I’ve been waiting 10 years for,” Stamos said. “It’s a continuation of what I think I’ve done well on TV: a show that has heart, is about family and has relatable themes.”

John Stamos previously told Entertainment Weekly that Grandfathered felt as magical to him as Full House did back in the day, and he had seemed to have high hopes for its success.

“Everybody loves it,” John said last fall. “I hope everyone can feel how much fun we’re having. Magic has to happen — chemistry, the right people, the stars have to all line up for something to be a hit. This show feels like that more than anything I’ve had since Full House.”

The cancellation of Grandfathered surprised many fans and at least one of its stars. Just one day before the cancellation was announced, Stamos’ co-star Paget Brewster tweeted that she thought the show might be coming back for a second season based on the fact that a key scene was deleted when the Season 1 finale aired last week. Obviously, Brewster was wrong, but it’s clear that the cast of the freshman sitcom was optimistic right up until the end.

While there’s already a Change.org petition to bring John Stamos’ Fox series back, the now-axed cast paid their respects to the show on social media.

Of course, John Stamos is in a unique situation. While Grandfathered won’t see a second season, his Full House spinoff, Fuller House, will. Production for the sophomore season of the Netflix comedy has just started, so John will have plenty to keep him busy — and maybe a little more time to show his Uncle Jesse face on the spinoff sitcom.
