A horrifying 2024 child abuse case that came out of Marion County, Florida, shocked the nation. It had been discovered that the father subjected his infant son to a cruel series of attacks. In August of that year, six-month-old Kenneth was rushed to the hospital after a medical emergency at home. Investigators discovered the infant had suffered severe physical abuse at the hands of his father, James Westervelt. The series of abuse included the 38-year-old man blasting the baby directly in the face with a high-powered leaf blower. 

On the morning of August 12, 2024, the baby’s mother fed him and left him home alone with Westervelt. When she returned, the baby was cold and unresponsive, so she panicked and called 911. The infant was rushed to the hospital but died days later. Doctors determined he died from violent shaking and severe head trauma.

At first, police arrested Westervelt on child abuse charges. However, as detectives began digging deeper into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death, more damning evidence came to light. 

Over a course of two years, detectives ran a thorough investigation which proved the baby’s death was not an accident. Authorities finally uncovered critical new proof, including video evidence and conflicting statements Westervelt made while talking to people from inside jail. 

According to the New York Post, the Florida grand jury has finally charged Westervelt with first-degree murder. Because the charges are now more serious, the father of the deceased child now faces spending the rest of his life in prison. 

When his son was just two months old, Westervelt held a running leaf blower directly to the newborn’s face. The blast of high-pressure air left the six-month-old violently struggling to breathe. Investigators discovered what happened after finding the disturbing footage saved on Westervelt’s own phone. When they asked him about it, his chilling excuse shocked everyone. He claimed he did it simply because he thought it was funny. 

While this specific incident did not kill the child, prosecutors said it surely is a testament to the ongoing pattern of severe abuse the infant endured. 

The horrific incident sent waves of shock across social media platforms.  “I honestly don’t know why we waste so much money and time in situations like this. Sometimes a trial seems completely unnecessary,” a frustrated Facebook user wrote. 

Another added, “I’m wondering if the baby was in a bouncer and he blew the air at that which caused it to bounce really hard which in turn caused shaken baby syndrome. That’s the only way I can make sense of the two things. The mother and grandmother are an entirely different kettle of fish and it sounds like the remaining 2 children shouldn’t be around any of these adults.”

A separate commentator who claimed to know the killer personally, chimed in with additional allegations,  “anyone who is from Ocala & knows this pos, the leaf blower incident happened prior to him passing away. It was just more evidence in his Snapchat of something he found “ funny “ to do to the baby & the baby had shaken baby syndrome when he passed away & yes actually they were both meth heads I’ve been around them both prior to knowing the type of people they were and I still do not know how she didn’t get charged as well.”
