A Hawaii man is accused of stabbing his 23-year-old girlfriend and their six-month-old baby boy in March 2020 in their Sun Rise apartment unit. The crime scene left the police horrified as he wrote “I’m sorry” in blood on the walls after stabbing his girlfriend, Kayla Holder, 38 times, and the baby, Kainoa, 17 times.

Ramsey, a former Schofield soldier from Chicago, was found guilty of first-degree murder by an Oahu jury. Apart from the fatal stabbings of his infant and girlfriend, Ramsey was also convicted of attempted first-degree assault. After the verdict, Honolulu Prosecutor Steve Alm noted, “Kayla Holder and her infant son should still be alive. This was an extraordinarily brutal act of domestic violence that took two innocent lives and forever devastated those who loved them. We hope these verdicts provide some measure of justice for Kayla, her son, and their family.”

Ramsey is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center without bail and will be sentenced on November 18. He may get a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The judge may also decide on additional sentencing, as the state provided enough evidence to support the claim.

During his trial, prosecutors revealed how police were horrified by the crime scene. The prosecutor added they were “unprepared for the horror that awaited them.” Deputy Prosecutor Scott Bell said in court, “One officer smelled it before he saw it.” There was blood on the sofa, carpet, and walls. The six-month-old was lifeless near the trash can, dressed only in a diaper.”

Bell further added, “His body was smeared in dried blood. Brain matter bulged from the devastating wound to the top of his head.” They further described that Holder’s eyes were still wide open while she was lying near the baby on her back.

Deputy Public Defender Hayley Cheng said in court, “He reached a breaking point. This was a man in crisis.” He added that Ramsey had gone through trauma, childhood abuse, and was under the stress of unemployment. He was battling suicidal thoughts and depression at the time of the murders. On that day, he was drunk and got into an argument with Holder. He blacked out and only realized what he had done after seeing Holder and the baby’s bodies.

The case has received national attention, directing the debate towards capital punishment and how mental health crises can affect a family. One Instagram user commented, “May their memory be a blessing. May he get the maximum punishment possible. We should have capital punishment for this kind of crime.” Another one posted, “Bring back the electric chair for these kinds of crimes!” Many asked how he could stab a six-month-old.
