Have you come across any high school couples who break up and then have public outbursts on social media? In today’s day and age, we bet you must have come across such examples. But the one breakup story that tops them all is of Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
Once touted as the “best buddies”, Trump and Musk’s relationship went downhill when we least expected. After all, Elon had spent millions of dollars in Trump’s presidential election, and in return, Trump gave him the status of a ‘special’ government employee as soon as he was elected. Together, as a team, they made big decisions under DOGE and sailed through the criticism and consequences that followed. But as we know it, Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” changed the dynamics of their relationship.
Elon ended his tenure with DOGE after serving for nearly four months, and went on to openly criticize Trump’s tax and spending bill. Things turned nasty when he claimed that Trump is in the Epstein files, which is the reason why those files aren’t made public yet. Though Musk deleted the tweet, Trump hit back at him in his own ways. He threatened to terminate Elon Musk’s governmental subsidies and contracts. In retaliation, Musk also threatened to decommission SpaceX Dragon, although he later calmed down and announced that he wouldn’t.
And let us remind you again: all this was happening on social media.
While the online outburst from both ends has relatively reduced, the friendship between both hasn’t fully restored. In an interview with NBC News, Trump expressed that he no longer has any desire to repair his relationship with the Tesla founder. When asked if their relationship is over, he replied, “I would assume so, yeah.”
Trump also asserted that if Musk goes on to fund Democratic candidates to run against Republicans in future elections, he would face serious consequences, although he didn’t mention what those consequences would be.
Meanwhile, at a press conference, Trump showed his soft side as he said, “We had a great relationship and I wish him well — very well, actually.”
As a clip from the conference was posted by an X user, fans were stunned to see Elon Musk’s reaction. The multi-billionaire made a heart emoji. Not gonna lie, but this low-key reminds us of estranged lovers who still have feelings for each other and express it just by dropping emojis on each other’s posts because they know they can’t afford to have any more outbursts.

The relationship between Musk and Trump is surely too complicated to define in a few words at this moment. A lot has been said and done from both sides. And the thing about public outbursts is that you cannot later pretend that it never happened.
Trump also mentioned during the NBC interview that he has no intentions of speaking with Elon any time soon. The President was quoted as, “I’m too busy doing other things. I have no intention of speaking to him.”
Trump also accused his former buddy of being “disrespectful to the office of the President.”
Well, their friendship was short, but was surely an historic (and controversial) one. Chances of them moving past these differences and resume their friendship look slim at this point. But who knows what the future holds for them!
