A 77-year-old woman, Carol from Pelodia, was arrested for DUI after she reportedly caused a two-vehicle crash at a four-way stop in Middletown, New Jersey, while driving at twice the legal limit. The officers arrived at the scene after the collision occurred at Main Street and Harmony Road, while the other driver claimed she had “pedal to the metal.”
As per the body-camera footage posted on Police Chase Network’s YouTube, the incident dates back to August 2023, when the eyewitnesses of the incident claimed that the 77-year-old woman caused the crash after she failed to yield at a four-way stop and drove into the path of another vehicle. The crash caused massive damage to both cars and deployed the airbags. However, no serious injuries were reported by the other involved party.
The other driver involved in the crash shared that he had already started moving through the intersection after stopping when the woman’s car hit the back of his vehicle. Witnesses also told police they saw her stop at the sign before pulling into the intersection and crashing into the other car.
Later, the officers approached and interrogated the elderly woman, who appeared confused about her location and struggled to answer. Both vehicles sustained significant damage; the woman’s car was inoperable and had to be towed. Upon interrogation, the woman stated that she believed she was headed to a courthouse but lost her way and ended up in Middletown.
She claimed that usually it was her husband, James, who would drop her off at the destination. The officers noted that the woman appeared disoriented in her speech as he said, “You seem off. Your mouth is very dry. You’re slurring your words quite a bit, and you have no idea where you are. That’s concerning.”
When she was initially asked if she had alcohol that day, she denied, but later accepted that she had consumed a glass of wine earlier in the afternoon. “Well, not zero. I had a glass of wine at 4:00,” she said. As part of the investigation, the woman underwent a series of field sobriety tests. She failed the horizontal gaze nystagmus eye test, and the officers told her the results indicated far more than one glass.
She then confessed to having a ‘big glass of wine’ and later confessed to ‘two glasses’ — one at 4 p.m. and one at 6 p.m. Additionally, she faced challenges with the walk and run DUI test, losing track of her steps. She also failed the one-leg stand test, acknowledging that her balance “isn’t right” due to her age, while she had previously claimed that she could walk normally.
After she failed the sobriety tests, the elderly woman was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated. “I’m placing you under arrest for driving while intoxicated,” the officer told the defendant. The footage further shows that she was taken to the police headquarters for official booking, where she remained cooperative. Nevertheless, she equally appeared confused while the doctors completed the administrative formalities of the DUI arrest.
