Earlier this week, on Monday, The Chicks’ bandleader, Natalie Maines, called out President Donald Trump in a lengthy note. The social media rant drew mixed responses from internet users, but drew strong opposition from the White House representative, who issued a scathing retort to the singer. Notably, Maines has always been very open about her political beliefs, which have even backfired against her at times.

On May 18, Natalie Maines shared an Instagram post blasting Trump for destroying democracy. She shared a series of pictures, including one of Trump, and began the caption, “Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes.” She continued by describing him as a “fugly slut” claiming that he has been the public’s gas money “to pay the insurrectionists.”

The singer’s post then took a sarcastic turn, as she asked people not to worry and assured them that “posting selfies” would solve everything. “My last post that called him a fugly slut got removed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Repost and help the message live. Named 1M times in the #epsteinfiles #democracy #freespeech #fuglyslut,” she further added.

Days later, while speaking with Fox News, the White House spokesperson addressed the singer’s bitter post. He stated that the singer is an evil person who has “rotted” her brain. In his words, “Natalie Maines is a despicable nobody who clearly suffers from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her peanut-sized brain.”

It is worth noting that Maines’ remarks drew massive backlash, with netizens pointing out her use of profane language and vulgar attacks. A user said, “Doesn’t she remember ruining her career over stupid political comments ? I guess not,” another user commented, “Has she looked in a mirror lately? That word describes her so much more accurately.”

A third user pointed out, “We effectively canceled them back during the George W Bush days when they spoke out of turn at a European concert. It appears as if she has added more pounds since then than fans.” One user added, “She’s the textbook case of someone’s inner ugliness manifesting itself as COMPLETE, all-encompassing ugliness.”

A section of users also supported the singer in the comments on her post, with one user insisting, “You been preachin’ truths from the start! Keep preachin’!” Another fan encouraged, “Get it, Natalie! You were right in 2003, and you are today.” A third fan said, “I love you so much and have always been proud to be a fan. Preach queen.”

According to People, ahead of her London concert in 2003, she had expressed her disapproval of the Iraq war and then-President George W. Bush. “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence. And we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas,” she had said at the time.

These comments of the singer backfired as fans burned their CDs and radios banned their music, which also included their 2002 song, ” Travelin’ Soldier that had topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart at the time.
