A Vanity Fair reporter in a green dress was captured smiling and winking at the camera during the Lindsay Clancy murder trial on Monday, August 24. Those who watched it live started questioning the identity of the woman, with an X user asking, “Who is the woman in the green dress at Lindsay Clancy’s trial, and what does she find so funny?”

The woman was later identified as a New York-based writer and editor, Brittany Romano. She has worked with publications such as Cosmopolitan, Oprah Daily, Kitchn, Forbes Vetted, Elle, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, and Teen Vogue.

However, the most jarring detail is that she grew up with Lindsay Clancy, who stands accused of killing her three children—five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan. Romano is receiving heat due to the gruesome case details and the seriousness of the trial, making everyone wonder what was so funny.

Romano is captured smiling for at least 30 seconds on camera, suggesting it was intentional. On her part, she clarified on social media, “Laughing because I grew up with Lindsay. She looked at me, and I looked at her, and I’m like–”. She also added, “He (her father) said I looked bad, so I was giggling.”

After severe criticism she posted, “All for smiling at a camera?! Love it! Tysm for boosting my analytics Xoxoxoxo. I’m actually proud of myself because these trolls have been absolutely vile: telling me to kill myself, telling me to slit my wrists, attacking me personally—and then blaming a trial for their behavior.”

The video of her smiling and winking at the camera went viral across social media. Many viewers were confused about her behavior, while some called her creepy. One YouTube viewer commented, “That’s so freaking creepy.”

Another one posted, “The smiling reporter should have been kicked out.” “No matter what side you are on, it is absolutely not appropriate to make a spectacle of this case where three children were murdered. Nothing warrants this extremely creepy and bizarre behavior. Notice how NO ONE else is smiling but those two airheads? Pathetic,” commented one more.

Another viewer posted, “The fact that she knew Lindsay makes it even worse—it’s hard for us to grasp the passing of these three children, but imagine if they were children you knew. And she has the nerve/ability to act like that during a trial for their murders?!?! Insane.”

Romano has been covering Clancy’s trial from the courtroom since August 17. In the aftermath of her smiling controversy, the courtroom revoked her credentials. Many people are also calling for her employers to fire her.
