“GLEE” actress Jane Lynch, tennis great Billie Jean King and a host of other prominent LGBT supporters joined together to form LPCA – A pro-lesbian super political action committee. LPAC will promote both Democratic and Republican candidates (male,female, gay and straight) who support issues important to the lesbian community, The Blaze reports. The pro-lesbian PAC website notes that the group seeks to positively influence the current political and social landscape and supports the rights of both women and LGBT individuals.
“The women of LPAC are stepping up to get organized like never before, aiming to give lesbians a real and meaningful seat at the table. With significant resources behind us, LPAC plans to make a true impact for lesbians in the 2012 election cycle and beyond” – as stated in the PAC’s official description.
Candidates likely to garner support from LPAC must support “ending discriminatory treatment: of LGBT individuals and their families, support sexual and reproductive freedom through quality healthcare and further racial, social and economic justice for every American, according to the LPAC website.
“Women’s voices get lost a lot and get overshadowed in almost all settings, so I think there‘s a real opportunity here to engage women who haven’t been engaged before — for lesbians, in particular, to speak for ourselves about the issues that are important to us and to define those issues in our own words. It’s a chance to really have a seat at the table when these critical issues are being discussed and the policy is being developed,” LPAC spokeswoman Sarah Schmidt stated during an interview with the Huffington Post.
LPAC hopes to raise at least $1 million for the 2012 presidential election.
