On Wednesday evening, California’s Chino Hills police responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots and screaming in a residential neighborhood on the 2000 block of Monteverde Drive.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, responding deputies arrived at the scene at about 10.14 p.m. on July 29. The department said an unidentified man in his 60s had been abducted from his home, shot once, and shoved into a car’s trunk.

Deputies, who located a Nissan Altima with Oregon license plate, initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to pull over, leading to a mile-long car chase, which only ended at Wandering Ridge Drive.

One of the two suspects, both 67, in the passenger seat surrendered peacefully, while the other suspect in the driver’s seat stepped out of the car, retrieving a weapon.

Surveillance footage shows him stepping out of the car and opening the vehicle’s trunk and fatally shooting the victim.

Officers then shot the driver and initiated life-saving treatment on the victim, but it was too late. The driver suspect and the victim were both pronounced dead.

The male suspect in the passenger seat, who was not injured, was arrested by police. The connection between the suspects and the victim has not been established yet, and the case remains under investigation. The motive behind the kidnapping and murder is also unclear. It was revealed during kidnapping that the suspects had already shot the victim before forcing him into the trunk.

One of the neighbors told a news outlet, “I was in the garage, and I heard two or three shots. When I heard the shots, I turned around, and I heard somebody yelling, ‘Help me, help me!’’

The victim’s wife was tracking her husband, who owned a local business via a device, which also assisted police in locating the vehicle. The couple shared three daughters. After the incident, several relatives and friends arrived at their house to offer condolences.

 

A family friend came to check up on the family after he heard about the news. He said in an interview, “I’m just really worried because nobody’s picking up the phone. I’m assuming they’re at the police station answering questions or something, but nobody’s picking up the phone.”

The news has shocked the community; however, police described the incident as an isolated event and said there is no risk posed to anyone in the neighborhood. The Sheriff’s Department wrote in an Instagram post, “Residents can expect a continued law enforcement presence in the area as the investigation remains ongoing.”

Social media users expressed their shock and grief after the news broke out. A viewer wrote, “My God, what in the hell is going on? People have gone insane, even more so now. RIP whoever was in the trunk.” Another commented, “Complete cop failure. They made him exit the vehicle, then allowed him to go back into the vehicle to get a weapon, then allowed him to open the trunk and shoot the guy inside the trunk.”

A third one added, “Why did the cops wait until he executed the guy in the trunk to fire?” “I feel sick. The victim hears police sirens from inside the trunk, thinking, ‘OMG I’ve been found. The cops are going to rescue me!’ Instead, he gets executed right in front of them. Disgusting,” wrote a fourth one.
